What’s the difference between ‘ale’ and other beers?

Bitters

The “National Drink of England”, Bitters make up some of the most popular ales in the world. While the distinct, hop-derived “bitter” notes give name to this style of beer, they are also characterized by the crisp flavour, making it a very easy beer to drink – indeed, this is ale you’ll begin and end an evening with.

At Tipples, our bitters are full-flavoured, but relatively modest in strength. These are not wild, flashy beers – in fact, they will reach your glass with the earthy, yeasty smell of the fermentation room still intact, a fragrance that true beer lovers have known for centuries.

Longshore - Bitter 3.6% ABV ( 215 )

Longshore is a light, session “Ordinary” bitter that drinks easy and is immensely pleasing. Pale amber in colour, this ale is nicely hopped, giving it a light, fresh finish. Perfect for a warm day, or when your palate desires something refreshing.
Redhead - Bitter 4.2 % ABV ( 141 )

Redhead is a traditional bitter and a perfect “all-around ale”. Bright reddish/amber in colour, this ale sports a slightly nutty malt flavour, along with a solid hoppy aroma. And the distinct bitter finish always calls for another.
Elm Hill Gold - Golden Ale 4.0% ABV ( 111 )

Elm Hill Gold was launched in October 2007 to celebrate the opening of our brewery shop on Elm Hill in Norwich. It’s a beautiful, smooth golden ale and makes a great addition to our portfolio. The bitterness and hop aromas blend and balance to make this a very drinkable ale.
Brewers Progress - Premium Bitter 4.6% ABV ( 160 )

Brewers Progress was launched in Spring 2008 as a new production beer. It is a full bodied smooth premium bitter at 4.6% ABV. It has enough bitterness to compliment the full rounded malt flavours. The hops are a mixture of UK and other European varieties to give a traditional hop finish combined with just a touch of lemony zing. Available all year round.

Pale Ales

Despite the “pale” moniker, most Pale Ales are amber in colour, and moderate in strength. Tipples pale ales are brewed largely from pale and extra pale malts, giving the beer a nice caramelized flavour and (sometimes) a slightly sweet touch.

We strive for both flavour balance and subtlety. Our Pale Ales have a healthy body, earthy English hop aroma, and rich flavour, making them a very versatile brew – they are equally good for quaffing or enjoying with a meal.

Ginger 3.8% ABV Pale Ale ( 312 )

Ginger is a bright, amber-coloured pale ale. Nicely hopped without much bitterness, this Ale also has something unique - fresh ginger is added near the end of brewing process. This provides a light, fresh (but not overpowering) ginger flavour, and makes it one of our customer’s favorites.
Lady Evelyn - Pale Golden Ale 4.1% ABV ( 535 )

Inspired by a local ghost story, Lady Evelyn is a “very” pale ale that is straw-coloured and full of flavour. With a long dry-ish finish, and a beautiful floral hop aroma, this Pale Ale is perfect for those that like the full flavour of Pale Ale, with a lighter body.
MoonRocket - Pale Ale 5.0% ABV ( 219 )

Moonrocket is a traditional, strong pale ale. Featuring a sturdy, hoppy aroma and a clean and crisp flavour, this Pale Ale finishes with a dry, citrussy note that will leave your tastebuds in an uproar.

Milds and Dark Ales

Milds are generally dark brown in colour, with a very soft happy bitterness. The slightly sweet, rounded caramel and chocolate flavours make this a popular style, and the pleasantly fruity aromatics and clean finishes make milds a pub favorite.

Tipples Milds are light in alcohol, and are very easy to drink. In fact, one could say they are the definitive "session pints," designed for quaffing amongst friends.

The Hanged Monk - Mild 3.8% ABV ( 429 )

Our third “Ghost story” offering, The Hanged Monk is a traditional Mild Ale. The deep colour and full body give it an appealing appearance in your pint glass, while the gentle hopping brewing process results in a sweet, mild flavour and a good malty nose.
Jack's Revenge - Dark Ale 5.8% ABV ( 344 )

“Pale” is hardly the word for this deep, dark ale. Our second “ghost story” offering, Jack’s Revenge is an ale that is as strong as its name suggests. With a long, malty finish, its strength is balanced by a carefully chosen hop blend, and goes well with meat dishes, like roast beef.
Crackle - Spiced Winter Ale 6.5% ABV ( 671 )

Crackle was test-brewed in the first snow of winter 2005 and it started its regular stint as our winter ale in 2006. And at 6.5% abv it really is a winter warmer. In addition to the dark malty swirls and fruity hop notes, this ale gets an extra burst of flavour from the blend of whole spices we add during brewing. Available from November to February.

Stouts

Black and ominous, topped with a creamy head of foam, the appearance of a pint of stout never fails to impress. However, to reverse a cliché, it’s really a sheep in wolf’s clothing.

Honestly - despite its stark appearance, Stouts are a very friendly style of beer. It’s the precision roasting of malts and raw barley that gives it its black colour and high-roast flavour. However, despite the rich flavour, a stout is actually light. Dry, brisk, and light, to be exact.

Tipples Stouts are designed for evenings at the pub, where they can be enjoyed in reasonable quantities. The hearty hop flavour combines with the roasted notes of espresso and dark chocolate. This results in an ale that is refreshing and light, but also immensely robust and flavourful, and tastes great cold or at room temperature.

Topper - Stout 4.5% ABV ( 256 )

Topper is a rich, traditional Stout that is amongst our finest offerings. Pour it into a glass and see why: The deep colour, with swirls of red and black; beckons. The strong aroma, full of complex chocolate and malt notes; tempts. And the flavour, wholly hearty and satisfying, with a long, distinct finish; harkens for another.
Black Moth - Double Stout 8.0% ABV ( 112 )

Black Moth is a double chocolate stout, beautifully dark and rich with very deep complex malt and berry flavours. Lightly hopped and very smooth. A beer to sip and savour. Black Moth is brewed once a year and is ready to enjoy only after maturing in cask for at least 4 months. This batch was brewed and bottled in 2007.

What’s the difference between ‘ale’ and other beers?

Go to your local supermarket – see row after row of that weak, yellow, fizzy stuff? That stuff they tell you to serve “ice cold”? That stuff that is akin to the big brand beers (like Budweiser, etc)? That stuff that’s “guzzled” in movies (and in real life by “Lager Louts” nationwide.)

That’s what most Lager has become. Light, tasteless beer (if you can call it that), meant to be served ice cold (and you know why, don’t you? The ice cold temperature hides the lack of flavour.)

This style of beer is so devoid of character and freshness that it is made with the intent that it lasts for months on store shelves. Additionally, substandard ingredients (like rice or corn) are mixed in as filler.

This leaves more money for huge marketing campaigns, which they do very well.
“Drink this” says the telly, and the vast majority of the populace will do just that. Despite the fact that it tastes like… well, let’s be polite here, but suffice to say, it tastes pretty bad.

We got into this business to do the exact opposite of the above. At Tipples, we don’t simply “brew” beer.

We craft it.

We craft beer (or more precisely, Ale) of such quality that once you taste it, you will never go back to the “other” style again.

But talk is cheap - we invite you to pour (or draw) a pint of any one of our fine ales.
